Posted: 27 Jun 2019 09:00 AM PDT A program that uses a machine learning algorithm to remove women's clothing from photos was pulled offline after its creator received widespread attention and backlash. The DeepNude app, first reported on by Motherboard Wednesday, digitally places realistic-looking breasts and female genitals on pictures of clothed women with a click of a button. The app's anonymous creator, who goes by the alias "Alberto," reportedly fed an algorithm 10,000 photos of nude women in order to teach his program how to make subjects appear naked. Photos produced by DeepNude included a large watermark unless users paid $50, in which case the watermark would be removed. "I'm not a voyeur, I'm a technology enthusiast," the creator told Motherboard. "Continuing to improve the algorithm. Recently, also due to previous failures (other startups) and economic problems, I asked myself if I could have an economic return from this algorithm. That's why I created DeepNude." When questioned on the ethics of his app, Alberto argued: "If I don't do it, someone else will do it in a year." But the developer's tune changed shortly after the website for his app began crashing due to overwhelming traffic. The app, which does not work on photos of men, also received criticism for objectifying women. Alberto wrote on the DeepNude Twitter account early Thursday that he will not continue working on the app. "Despite the safety measures adopted (watermarks), if 500,000 people use it the probability that people will misuse it is too high," the statement said. — deepnudeapp (@deepnudeapp) June 27, 2019 Although the app was taken down, users who already downloaded the software are still capable of using it and spreading photos it made online. And now that the concept has surfaced, copycat apps are likely to follow. READ MORE: Got five minutes? We'd love to hear from you. Plus-size women's clothing store comes to Woodland Mall - MLive.com Posted: 26 Jun 2019 11:24 AM PDT KENTWOOD, MI — A new, plus-size women's clothing store has opened at Woodland Mall. A'Beautiful Soul, which specializes in women's clothing in sizes 12 to 14, will host a grand opening event Saturday, July 13. It's the retailers first store in Michigan and its fifth in the U.S., according to a news release from Woodland Mall. "A'Beautiful Soul emphasizes that beauty is found within a woman's mind, heart and soul. Paired with its attention to the customer experience, this retailer ensures each guest leaves feeling beautiful and confident," Cecily McCabe, Woodland Mall's marketing director, said in a statement. The store is owned by the same company as Altar'd State, a retailer that carries women's clothing, jewelry, gifts and accessories. Altar'd State, which opened in October, started as a "modest Christian retail store and coffee shop in Knoxville, Tennessee in 2009, and has since grown its footprint to nearly 100 boutiques across the nation." A'Beautiful Soul's grand opening celebration will start at 9:45 a.m. with a store blessing and prayer circle. It will also include a fashion show, live music and refreshments. While Tuesday, July 13 marks the store's grand opening, about half of the A'Beautiful Soul store opened and began accepting shopper on June 7. Construction, currently underway in the other half of the store, is expected to be wrapped up in time for the July 13 grand opening. A'Beautiful Soul is Woodland's second plus size clothing store for women. The store Torrid also specializes in the clothing. |
A New Crop Of Online Boutiques Has Us Excited For Summer Dressing - Refinery29 Posted: 25 Jun 2019 01:58 PM PDT We've seen so many new retailers crop up, in fact, that we decided to do a deep dive on some of our faves. To ensure that we don't keep you here all day, we narrowed our focus to stores that have opened in the past two years, and ones that are either multi-brand or, if not, stock enough merchandise to keep you scrolling/browsing for a good chunk of your lunch break. We've included shops that cater to every budget, so whether you're in the market for a cheap-and-cheerful summer dress or an artisan-made leather bag that you'll tote every day, you'll hopefully get something out of this list. And while you may have heard of a few shops in our roundup — especially if you're a regular R29 reader — we tried to eliminate any obvious banner names, because we want to make sure you feel the same rush of discovery that we do. |
First Lite 2019 Collection: Women's Hunt Clothing That Rocks (and More) - GearJunkie Posted: 28 Jun 2019 10:22 AM PDT First Lite's 2019 offerings expand its growing women's line substantially while complementing its current men's line and building on accessories. Fall is in sight, and with that comes the swath of new gear from the hunting retail world. First Lite's latest offerings include a swath of gloves, outerwear, and bib systems for both men and women. Here, we highlight the notable pieces available right now and provide a first look at the Catalyst setup for women. Catalyst Jacket & Pant — Women's: $230-240Currently available, the Catalyst collection is a soft-shell jacket and pant designed to be quiet, breathable, and wind-breaking. I've been patiently awaiting a wind-breaking outerwear option from the First Lite crew, and this setup is pretty cool. The soft-shell, DWR-treated fabric is sturdy yet forgiving, and I dig the fleece option on the interior. This is definitely a figure-hugging cut in both options, so I wouldn't wear more than a light base layer underneath at most. The tapered sleeve is thoughtful for those of us who bow hunt, and the cut of the pant is boot-friendly without the bulk. I've worn the women's Alturas for a few years now, and I love them for light hiking and warm-weather hunts. But they certainly weren't my go-to option for late-fall rifle hunts in windy and cold conditions. I'm looking forward to getting out in the field in the Catalyst system, and with only 66 days until elk season, the countdown is on. Expect a more in-depth review once hunting season is upon us. Brooks Down Glassing Mitt: $80Am I allowed to be excited about gigantic mittens made of down for more than glassing? Yeah, I think so. This puffy option for keeping your hands warm while maneuvering binos and scopes on high ridges looks wildly warm. At 3.5 ounces for the pair, they're dang light. And the fact that they're fleece-lined just sells them even harder. Now's where I ask the First Lite crew: When will you launch down booties for base camp? See the Brooks Down Glassing Mitt Solitude Insulated Jacket & Bib — Men's: $270-290Coming in August, the Solitude Bib is a part of First Lite's foray into whitetail territory. Designed for midseason treestand sits, the Solitude Bib pairs as a system with the Solitude Jacket. Both are insulated soft-shell fabric, and the KitLink pass-through side zips on the jacket allow immediate access to the bibs beneath. Brooks Down Sweater — Men's: $265-285The Brooks Down Sweater is First Lite's answer to the ultralight, packable down often seen on the alpine side of things. At just under 11 ounces, this DWR-treated, 800-fill DownTek jacket is competitive in the market at both price point and warmth-to-weight ratio. And it's available in both camo and solids, making it an ideal in-between from town to hills. Sanctuary Jacket & Bib — Women's: $325-375Building out on the whitetail theme, First Lite ladies now have an option for bitter cold sits in whitetail country. The Sanctuary system boasts 300 g of 37.5 insulation, paired with water-resistant technology and ventilation options that include full side zips on the bibs. The jacket is thick but not exceptionally bulky, with a Shooter's Cut on the sleeve for shooting flexibility. Sawbuck Brush Pant — Men's: $150-160The Sawbuck Brush Pant takes on a different type of durability, with an eye towards spending all day in — what else — heavy brush. This pant looks to be a great option for the heavy-duty chukar hunter or the mule-deer stalker in the sagebrush sea. With double nylon front panels from thigh to ankle, the Sawbuck protects while aiming for a flexible, climbing-pant type of fit. |
The Funky Zebras: Women's clothing, accessory boutique opens in Clear Lake - Globe Gazette Posted: 25 Jun 2019 12:54 PM PDT A women's clothing and accessory boutique has arrived in Clear Lake. That's thanks to Carisa Danielson, of Ames, who opened The Funky Zebras, 210 U.S. Highway 18 Suite B, in Clear Lake on Saturday. "Everybody who came in was super positive and happy to have something in town that was different," Danielson said. "It was a good weekend." Remodeling at the storefront began a month ago to turn the former office space into a neighborhood shopping experience. The boutique, located in the former Shelter Insurance storefront at the Plaza 210 shopping center, offers an array of trendy and contemporary summer tops, bottoms and dresses as well as handbags, footwear and jewelry. "We get new things every week," Danielson said. Danielson, who teaches sixth grade social studies in Ames, said she decided to open The Funky Zebras after a friend did in another community. She and her mother and 13-year-old daughter Addyson, who will be helping out at the store, enjoy fashion, and opening a boutique was something they always talked about doing. "When it came up, we went for it," Danielson said. Thanks for reading. She was attracted to Clear Lake because of its tourism and its lake views. The boutique will employ four individuals, including one full-time manager who will oversee store operations when Danielson is teaching. "I'm looking forward to helping women find that perfect outfit and meeting a lot of new people up here," Danielson said. "Hopefully, our family will get to spend time on the lake while we're up here, too." There are boutiques by the same name under different owners in Ankeny, Ames, Clive, Grundy Center, Pella and Webster City. The Funky Zebras is open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and Friday through Saturday; 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Thursday; and 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday. |
